Class of 2001 is on the go

By Anne Caldarullo

Class elections were held on September 18, 1997. Results are as follow: President- Jennifer Starzynski, Vice-President- Ryan Deady, Secretary- Joanna Dabros, Treasurer- Kathryn Bundalo, Student Council Representatives- Robert Kolodziej, Christopher Lopuski, Joe Messina, and Jonathan Paszt.

Please read the article on Homecoming to know what is happening during Spirit Week Oct 6 -11th. Specifically as a class we need to follow the themes for each day to earn points for our class for the spirit trophy. Participate in the trivia contests, jar contest, and spirit link contests. Help out the Class of 2001. We can win that trophy.

We need people to design and work on homecoming decorations and car decorations. We decorate the wall on the north side of the gym and work in the north end of the wood shop. We need to plan our car decorations for the parade on the 11th. See Ms. Murray if you want to help. This is a total class activity. Everyone is needed to help.

Class of 1999 plans its year

By Michelle Gulik

At the first junior class meeting of the 97-98 school year, it was announced that the class had a total of $2,382.38. To help increase this amount it was suggested to have a rummage sale in the spring.

Junior Class officers are President Stacey Mauer, Vice-President Michelle Gulik, Secretary Diane Guth, and Treasurer Monica Knapp. The class advisor is Mrs. Hansen. Class meeting times are now Mondays at 3 p.m. in room 229.

Different approaches to the designs for the homecoming wall were discussed. For Juniors to do as well , or even better, as they did last year, it is important that all 167 juniors help participate in any way possible.

We also discussed how three different community service acts could be accomplished. We need one for each year we have been in school.

Speech Club practices

By Lisa Giacamino

The Speech Club is off to a great start this year but would like more members. The team competes against other conference schools. Some of the categories are humorous monolog, serious duet, and humorous duet. If you are interested, see Ms. Lindenfeld. "The goal of the Speech Club this year is to win," said Ms. Lindenfeld. "Come join speech club or just check us out. We’re a great team and would love to have more people!"

Freshmen Mixer exceed expectations

By Anne Caldarullo

The Freshman Mixer was held in the Front Lobby on September 5th and sponsored by Student Council. It go off to a slow start but then Dana Jones, Lisa Perna, and Amy Thorne got the party started by at least getting the girls to dance. Eventually a few brave guys got off their chairs and danced.

According to Mrs. Netterstrom, the turnout was excellent. Only fifty people were expected to attend, but close to eighty-five showed up. This is almost fifty percent of the class. Rosario Terraciano and Tony Santucci as DJ’s played good music which got most of the people to party. Some people, including myself, thought that too many slow songs were played and not enough mixes.

Because of the large number of people attending, drinks ran short, and it got really hot. Doors could not be opened because of security reasons.

If you have any suggestions or comments that could improve next year’s freshmen mixer, attend a Student Council meeting or join Student Council yourself.

Internet Club Holds Elections

By Kevin Szaflik

The Internet Club held its annual elections on Wednesday, September 17th. The officers for the 1997-1998 school year are: President Jamie Pagano, Vice President Jeremy Wendel, Secretaries Mark Samek and Jenny Starzynski, and Treasurer Mike Saliszewski.

The other members are: Vince Ho, Sean Hughes, Ivan Kovalenko, Ted Mistal, Sylvester Olszewski, Jon Shulda, Chris Soszynski, Monica Szaflik, and Orlando Vital. The club advisor is Kevin Szaflik, who is the Webmaster and Postmaster for Ridgewood’s Internet Servers. He also helps with computer training in the Computer Department.

The club writes all the web pages on Ridgewood’s Internet Website. The site is located at www.ridgenet.org . Ridgewood’s e-mail address is ridgewood@ridgenet.org.

"We are always looking for new members," said Mr. Szaflik. "Try and do as many things as you can, and learn as much as you can," adds Vice President Jeremy Wendel.

It’s still not too late to join the club. Meetings are on Mondays after school in room 147G, just off the Library.

Ms. Michelon is new advisor for Class of 2000!!!!!!

By Iris Giannakis

Ms. Michelon is the new sophomore class advisor and will be for the next two years. "I haven’t advised a class for two years ,and I am looking forward to advising the class of 2000," Ms. Michelon said.

The class of 2000 officers are Lisa Perna- President, Amy Thorn-Vice President, Andreas Revelis- Secretary, Kelly Thesen- Treasurer, Representatives- Jennene Fields, Dana Jones, Stephanie Malmi, and Shannon McDonough. Their goal is to make the year more fun and have as many people help out as possible to make it more exciting. Right now they are working on 3 BIG projects.

One of those BIG projects is Homecoming in October. Come help your class out with the decorations for the gym and car.

The second BIG project is the Ice Cream Social, which is on Friday September 26th. Ice cream will be sold during lunch periods, and it will cost $1.50. Get one. It will be delicious.

The last BIG project is the Red Ribbon Parade on October 19th from 12-1 p.m. See Ms. Michelon if you want to participate or help out.

One last thing: Remember to come to the class meetings on Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. in Room 232 to tell your bright ideas and help out. So far A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE SHOWN INTEREST. Keep up the good work. As of September 5, the Class of 2000 had 186 members, 87 males and 99 females. Welcome to Mitchell Heflin, a new sophomore who transferred from Resurrection and is already very involved in RHS athletics.

New column coming

Guess what ? We will be having a new column in the Ridgewood Reporter. This column will be written by Alum Peter Drossos. He is a recent college graduate who works for 3Com. He is interested in your questions about college or newly entering the work force. Write your questions down with a name and first block teacher and submit to Ms. Sauter in Room 224 or Ms. Flinn in the Library. We hope to answer them in the next issue.

Varsity R gets going

By Melissa Guynn

Our first meeting was on September 12th. If you have a Varsity R and have not been notified about meetings, let Mr. Kalina know. We need all Varsity R members at all meetings. If you have any questions, see Mr. Kalina or President Beth Bundalo, Vice President Tony Marti, or Secretary Kristin Keglovitz.

Tradition In the Name

By Lou Mezzano

The Rebels of Ridgewood came out Saturday August 30, to play Eric Bahava " The Great White Hype" and the Riverside Brookfield Bulldogs. Going into the game everyone thought the Bulldogs were assured the win. The only doubts were in the Rebels and their coaches. In that Saturday’s game the Rebels took it to the Bulldogs, beating them unmercifully 35-14. Contributing players to the win were, Brian "Bubba" Floral with 3 touchdowns, Butch DeFelice with his outstanding throwing arm, and the bash brothers Tony Marti and George Mueller with their hard hitting defense.

What made the team so wound up to win was the fact that the coach of the Bulldogs quoted the Ridgewood Rebels of not having tradition. "I have not beaten this team yet, so let’s show them our tradition for the last time," said captain Tony Marti before the Rebels took the field. Mr. Ryan also won a steak dinner from the R-B’s athletic director. As he shouted at the Fall Pep Assembly, "The party’s over!"

Twice as Nice

By Louis Mezzano

The Rebels came out a little flat against Geneva. They let the Vikings walk all over them for the first few minutes of the game. The Rebels tried to score on the opening drive but failed. The Vikings took over and scored the first TD of the game. Then the Rebels woke up and started their fires.

The Rebels systematically destroyed the Vikings from that point on. With the wonderful arm of Butch DeFelice and the running of Brian Rzewnicki, the Rebels conquered their enemies 38 to 13. After this huge win, the Rebels moved up to rank 7 in Division 4A.

Cross Country off to a quick start

By Dan Swibel

The Ridgewood Cross Country Team is off to a quick start this year, led by team captains Danny Swibel, Tony Raimondi, Emily Delvalle, and Michelle Monson. The boys have many runners returning from last year and more moving up to varsity, making them extremely fierce competitors. The same goes for the girls, who brought back a third-place trophy from their last meet. The girls are hoping to win at Regionals, take on Sectionals, and hopefully get some members downstate. The boys are also shooting for Sectionals and to get a few downstate. Under the strong leadership of coaches Dave Borg and Greg Hauptman, it is certain that Cross Country is going to be successful at Ridgewood.

Rebels overwhelm Vikings

By Louis Mezzano

The Sycamore Vikings came out hungry to play the 7th ranked 4a Rebels September 12th. It was an all out battle the first half of the game. Not much was working for both teams.

At the end of the half, the score was 16-15 in favor of the Vikings. Tight end and defensive lineman, Otto Barbanente said" We can get these guys, They’re nothing". This helped to spark the team for the next half.

The second half started with our team receiving the kick. The Rebels quickly scored to take a 22-16 lead. The Rebels were up. They poured it on and destroyed the Vikings score

Contributing to the win were "Woody" Palazzo #22 with his first touchdown, Brian Floral and Randy Messina with the huge blocks, Renzo Berardi with a great kickoff and field goals.

After this huge win, the Rebels moved up to rank 6th in 4A. Brian Rzewnicki was chosen "Athlete of the Week."

The Rebels lost 37-7 to Minooka on September 20. Parents Day is Saturday, September 27.

Band measures its notes

By Melissa Guynn

Band is on a roll with the new year. We have already started our fundraisers. Think of us before you shop elsewhere. The entertainment book sale was a smash, and now we are selling wrapping paper. This means you can see any band or chorus member to buy wrapping paper for all occasions. Stock up now.

The 8th graders will be joining us in the pep band for the Homecoming game. Catch the new sound. The first concert for band is the Fall Concert on October 22 in the Front Lobby. Please join us. Like any other team or activity, we enjoy and appreciate the support.

Speak to your counselor, if you aren’t in band now and would like to be next semester. Remember Mr. Klaus is the band director.

Horoscopes

By Iris Giannakis

These Horoscopes are for entertainment purposes only!

For those born this month:
Romance will take its toll for the rest of the year, filling your days with magic.

Aries- You never know who could pick up the phone and dial the magic digits. You’ll find yourself thinking of him/her than your new honey.

Taurus- Nothing can go totally wrong in your life, and not everything can be perfect. Just be happy with what you earn ,and everything you want will come your way soon.

Gemini- Remember that you have to keep everything in control and not let it get out of hand, or everyone will know what a "wild" time you (er two) are having!

Cancer- Someone may want to tell you something, but is afraid of how you’ll take it. Remember that you’re a friend.

Leo- You’ve been seeing someone and thinking of getting serious. It will last with fun- filled memories.

Virgo- You’ve blown off many important things in your life, and you are losing at this "so-called" match. Things are about to get worse if you don’t realize what you’ve done wrong.

Libra- You’re ready to go on to bigger and better things. Now is the time to catch up on projects and settle unfinished business.

Scorpio- You’ve been working hard lately. You always want to get things done. Take some time off and concentrate on yourself.

Sagittarius- Get over it. Your loved one has already moved on, and you don’t need to relive the past. Besides, you’ll find someone much better.

Capricorn- Your favorite’s declaration of love will rock your world this month (Oh my). Warning: he/she is attracted to you like a moth to a flame.

Aquarius- Someone has been trying to get your attention for a while. You’ll become more than friends.

Pisces- Thought that you were all that and them some, huh? Wrong. Your ego has gotten out of control, and people may not see you as you see yourself.

Community walks for Red Ribbon week

On Sunday , October 19th, there will be a P.R.I.D.E. (People Responsibly Involved in Drug Education) sponsored community walk to kick off Red Ribbon Week. The walk begins at Norridge Park at Noon. Walkers will step off for one and one-half miles through the neighborhood. The walk ends back at Norridge Park at about 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Groups from Ridgewood High School are invited to join the walk. Last year over 400 people participated. See Ms. Lovero if you have questions, or your group wishes to walk.
