Letter urges involvement

Don't think that you can't do anything in this school! You are part of this school, and you can change whatever you want. All you need to do is really want to make a difference. Do you know that about 50% of (RHS) students are Polish or have Polish backgrounds. We are part of this school, and we should fight for our rights. Just remember, we are important in this school!

We would like to encourage you to participate in school life. Some things you can do are:

You can join the Student Council which takes care of all kinds of school activities, like the blood drives, homecoming, food drive, adopt-a-kid, and leadership conferences.

You can also join any kind of sports: football, track, softball, basketball, wrestling, baseball, volleyball, soccer. You can be one of the athletes if you want.

You can join Class Councils, Creative Waves, Mathletes, Science Club, Scholastic Bowl, Yearbook, Newspaper, FBLA, DECA, National Honor Society, Pom Pons, Cheerleading, Varsity R, Drama Club, R-Stop, or Snowball.

Remember it's going to help you a lot when you're gone from RHS.

Mrs. Netterstrom Responds

Musical Notes

By: Natalie Biancalana

On Thursday, March twenty-first, the band and chorus gave their annual Pops Concert. The chorus began the concert with their first a cappella performance of the year, the song "Dreamer." The band followed up with their first two numbers, "Renegade" and "With One Look" from Sunset Boulevard (Broadway play)..

Next an original composition by John Szymanski was performed by Mr. Melbourn, Alan Huebner, and John. They were accompanied by background parts which John had pre-recorded on the computer. It was an outstanding piece titled "Blue Skies and Thunder."

The chorus returned to give the audience a blast from the past with the songs, "It's My Party," "Sweet Talkin' Guy," "To Know His is To Love Him," and "One Fine Day." They were definitely cool!

The band wrapped up the evening with two selections- a group of songs from Walt Disney's Pocahontas and with "Marches of America" - a medley of American marches. Their performance was dynamic!

The band and chorus went to the Auditorium Theater to see a matinee performance of the musical Showboat. Before the show began, the students saw a video on the back stage work involved in performing Showboat. Showboat tells the story of the people who own and work on a showboat. It spans from the 1890s to the 1920s and follows the characters' lives, both on and off the showboat.

The students enjoyed the music so much that for their Spring Concert on May 15, the band performed a medley of songs from the show. The band also played two other selections. Two student compositions were featured. They were written by Arlene Penaflorida and John Szymanski.

The chorus finished the concert with four selections: "Gloria Alleluia," "Make a Song for My Heart to Sing," "My Johnny's a Soldier," and "Medley from Sister Act, which really got the audience involved. Everyone went home humming a tune or two.

The chorus finished its season with a Courtyard Concert on May 22. The band's final performance for the year will be at graduation on June 3.

Mr. Mallen Samples Teaching

By: Sofia Frangiadakis and Anna Kritikakos

Many students here at RHS have had the chance to meet Mr. Mallen through the soccer team, we had a chance to get to know Coach Marty pretty well.

Why did you want to become a Physical education teacher?

PE classes allow me to interact with other students who may not be athletically inclined or unable to participate in sports due to other constraints. I believe that a sound physical fitness plan and execution of it can lead to a healthy and long life. My major is exercise with an education emphasis. Courses include biomechanics, anatomy, exercise physiology, motor development, math, statistics and education courses.

How do you like RHS, and how do you feel about the kids here?

I have had a fine experience at RHS. For the most part the students are respectful and have treated me well.

What goals do you have for your students?

My main goal in class is to get students involved in activity. Once they are active then it's incumbent on me to develop their skills in a particular event. An equally important goal is to allow students options, letting them develop their own programs, strategies or teams.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I officiate college and high school football, coach soccer at North Park College, and I also coach soccer here at RHS.

Any further comments?

I am extremely proud of the effort that the girls soccer team has shown so far this season. I have no doubt that with more experience and improved training facilities, these girls will have success.

Soccer team comes out kicking

By: Sofia Frangiadakis and Anna Kritikakos

This is the first year that Ridgewood has had a girls' soccer team. We are coached by Coach Rich Lubes and Assistant Coach Marty Mallen. We have been in training for quite a long time, with a lot of running and drills of all sorts. We have improved tremendously in all our soccer skills since the very first day. Our first game with Fenton was postponed to May 14. We then played Geneva, one of the top schools in soccer. We played a very intense game against them, but we lost 2-0.

New Student Teacher In Gym

His name is Mr. Oshea. He is majoring in physical education because "I enjoy working with young kids. It is a great opportunity for me to pass on my knowledge about sports and other activities to the students".

What do you plan on doing this summer?

I plan on trying out for a semi-pro basketball team this summer. If everything works out, I will be playing next year, and I will put teaching aside for a while.

What do you like about Ridgewood?

I like Ridgewood a lot. Everyone has been very nice to me and made me feel really welcome. Also the kids are GREAT! My experience at Ridgewood has been very helpful. I have taught five different classes of all age groups, so I have had a variety of experiences. I would definitely like to work here at Ridgewood. I would love to work with Mr. Pappone.

Baseball Team Advances to Regionals

The RHS Baseball team finished its season May 21 with a heartbreaking loss to Montini. Three of these were shutouts. They won the Ridgewood Classic and the Ridgewood Invite and had many shutouts during the season. They were ranked in the top ten Class A during the season. The team is coached by Paul Frerking.
