A Back-To-School Shopping List

What parents need for the new school year.

From Rebel Readings Volume V, Issue 1

When you think about preparing for the new school year, you probably think about what your children will need. That’s important, but don’t overlook all the things that you, as a parent or guardian, will need to start the year out right:

A copy of your children’s schedules. You should know what classes they have and when they meet. You should also make sure that your children are in the classes they want to be in. Be your children’s advocate.

The names and telephone numbers of your children’s teachers. Contact them, or write them a note inviting them to contact you. It’s important to open the lines of communication early, so that you and the teachers can react swiftly and in unison both to positive and negative developments.

The teachers’ grading systems. This information can help you help your children structure their studying. For example, if you know that a teacher gives a final exam , you can encourage your children to begin studying for it well in advance.

A copy of the school rules. This will enable you to help your children avoid breaking them.

Course descriptions. Finding out what your children will be studying will enable you to help them learn.

Important dates to mark on your Calendar (concerts, meetings, sporting events, deadlines).

A moment to discuss the new school year with your children. Talk about what they are looking forward to and what they’re not. What did they do well last year that they would like to continue? Be careful not to lecture. Instead, listen to your children, help them reflect on the year behind and focus on the year ahead.

Enthusiasm. Be sure to store up plenty. Most kids start each school year hopeful and optimistic. As the year continues, they will need your encouragement, enthusiasm and support to help them along.

Patience. This year as we implement the block schedule, we anticipate that many students will be aprehensive about the change. This is normal. Change is always difficult, but it is especially so when you are anticipating an unknown. Rest assured that we are aprehensive as well, and all of us at the school will be working with the students to overcome the anxiety. The year promises to be exciting, as well as productive. Please plan on joining us September 25 for a parent Open House to help you better understand the changes. Please talk with your students about school, and if you have any questions, please contact the principal’s office at extension 237 or the teacher if your questions is about a specific class.
