Hear Our Rebel Yell.
On March 3, 2009, students interviewed science teacher Hugh "Monty" Adams, a new faculty
member.
There are standard questions students ask the guest but they learn to ask follow up
questions according to Multimedia Club advisor Kevin Szaflik. This allows students to learn
preparation and at the same time how to be fluid in asking follow-up questions.
"It's basically a normal conversation between two people. It's 14 minutes; that's not that
long," freshman Joanne Dynak said.
Students operate the TelePrompTer, the sound board, the switcher and the cameras.
"We have people who host it. We have people in the back on cameras, audio, CG and
TelePrompTer. It's fun. You get to know all of the teachers and from a different perspective
also. We have questions or we can base it on their life. We ask them what kind of teacher they
are, what they do and about their personal life," sophomore Meg Rosol said.
Rosol said she learned how to run the equipment by doing.
Dynak and freshman Joey Magnelli learned about the Multimedia Club during freshman
orientation.
"I mainly do camera and work as a stage manager. It's fun. I've always been a tech person.
I like to mess around with technology. It's also a good way to meet people," Magnelli said.
Dynak has done behind the scenes work as well as one interview she hopes will turn into
more in the future.
"It's interesting. There are different qualities for each. I like behind the scenes. It's
kind of interesting because it's really important. You're basically putting the whole show
together, but also when you're on screen, there's a bit more pressure because it's actually
what people see and pay more attention to,' Dynak said.
While other segments the students produce require a lot of editing, "The Scoop" airs almost
exactly as it's taped.
"For this show there is very little editing done. We do the promos. We'll add some graphics
to it and effects," Szaflik said.
When shooting segments, students are able to chose which role they want but Szaflik
encourages them to try different positions. There are about 25 to 30 students in the
Multimedia Club.
Adams' interview is the 226th episode of "The Scoop," which is shot weekly and aired on
Comcast Channel 19 in the suburbs Thursdays at 7:00 PM.
His interview will air at 7:00 PM July 16, 2009. Other segments students shoot include
"The Music Edge," "Just Kidding Around," "Local Legends" and "The
World As We See It."

WRHS Alumnus Jeff Angileri offers tips to graduates
When choosing a guest speaker for the May 27, 2008 graduation ceremony for the Class of 2008, administrators at Ridgewood High School opted for experience. Jeff Angileri has plenty of that.

In 1998, he gave the valedictory address at Leigh Elementary School. In 2002, he was the valedictory speaker at Ridgewood's graduation. In 2006, as a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, he gave the commencement address. He returned to Leigh as guest graduation speaker in May 2006. His May 27, 2008 appearance at Ridgewood's commencement marked his fifth speech to a graduating class.
"It's truly an honor to stand upon this stage with my sister Brittney and her friends and classmates who I've gotten to know over the years," he said.
Angileri admitted he'd been surprised by the invitation to speak.
"The last time I looked in the mirror, I didn't see any grey hairs or wrinkles, which seem to be prerequisites for alumni speakers," he said.
He advised the Class of 2008 not to fear failure.
"Failure teaches. Don't be afraid of it," he said. "As comedian Woody Allen said, 'If you're not failing every now and again, it's a sign you're not doing anything very innovative."
Then, he warned them that the time for stupidity is over.
"I've been in the working world for a mere 20 months, and I've already seen four careers ruined by stupid acts," he explained. "Think about it. Everything nowadays is too well documented. Something happens and five minutes later someone has posted it on YouTube or MySpace or Facebook. Schools and employers are getting smart -- all they have to do is Google your name and your entire life history is available."
Angileri, who earned his bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism, is currently anchor, producer and reporter at WJFW-TV Channel 12, an NBC affiliate in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. On June 9, he'll begin his new job as general assignment reporter at WMSN-TV Fox Channel 47 and WKOW-TV ABC Channel 27 in Madison, Wisconsin. He is the son of Steve and Janis Angileri, of Norridge.
