| 'Mattress' musical comes to Ridgewood |
|
As Ridgewood High School students rehearsed for their production
of "Once Upon A Mattress," based on "The Princess and the Pea,"
drama director Jim Smith said pre-recorded music helps with school
productions.

through November 14, 2009.

"This is our fourth musical in as many years," he said. "When I
first began at Ridgewood High School six years ago, I immediately
began to investigate how we could produce a musical. I had a lot
of items on my agenda at that time."

preparations to the set of "Once Upon a Mattress," which was
performed at the school last weekend.

Smith said the first agenda item was bringing a thespian troupe
to the school, which was accomplished by being inducted as Troupe
6662.

Smith then investigated how to do a musical. "Some things made
it a little bit difficult," he said. "We didn't really have a
student pit orchestra. Our current band director suggested that we
could hire musicians but doing so would be roughly about three
times our annual budget for the year. So that was out of the
question."

"Our very first musical was 'You're a Good Man, Charlie
Brown,'" he continued. "That was a great show to do because it was
a small cast and we were fortunate enough to have a very talented
student, Bill Bohman. He could play piano and he played all the
music for that show and did a great job."

"When I started with that one, you needed a lot more elaborate
music," Smith said. "What I had discovered was this company called
MT Pit. They're a company that rents recorded music of the
musicals. It's a fully orchestrated CD that they give you. We're
able to play that during the shows and it sounds like we have a
full orchestra and the students are able to sing along with it."

Smith also used the recorded music for last year's production
of "Bye Bye Birdie" and now for "Once Upon A Mattress."
"I felt it ("Once Upon a Mattress") was a bigger show than
we've done," he said. "I knew I had a lot more students to work
with and it's still musically easy to do. In addition, I look at
some of my students that are thespians ... and I want to pick a
show that's going to compliment their talents, too."

This Saturday, October 31st at 6:00 PM
One Canned Good for Admission
480 pounds of food collected for our local food pantry through the Salvation Army in
Norridge.
What is more frightening than the scariest haunted house on Halloween?
Hunger. Halloween is a time of fun and excitement where you eat as much
candy as you possibly can, but according to America’s Second Harvest Network,
one in five children face hunger in America all year round. You, Ridgewood,
can help. On Saturday, October 31st, you can attend the annual Haunted House to Scare
Away Hunger at 6:00 PM in the Frances Bernero Auditorium, Room 105. Bring a single canned good
for your admission and help us scare away the feeling of being hungry for
good!

| Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare |
|
Much Ado About Nothing is the story of two very different sets of lovers, Beatrice
and Benedict and Claudio and Hero. The witty banter between Beatrice and
Benedict is the highlight of the play. The main plot revolves around obstacles to
the union of two young lovers, Claudio and Hero. While the play’s sub-plot, the
"merry war" of the sexes, revolves around Beatrice and Benedict. Benedict thinks
he hates Beatrice but really loves her and Beatrice who thinks she hates Benedict
but really loves him! Ridgewood Drama and Thespian Troupe #6662 are proud
to once again present Shakespeare in the round. Although this show will be
presented as Shakespeare intended, you do not need to be a student of
Shakespeare to enjoy this performance. It’s fun for everyone!
