Dear Parent (s):

We provide food services for Ridgewood High School. We would like to introduce a convenient concept to you. It’s called the Cafeteria Debit Program. This program is a computerized system that allows students to have a special account with funds for making only food purchases for breakfast or lunch while at school. Please read the following helpful information.

  1. Cafeteria Debit Program Benefits:
    1. Anyone making an initial deposit of $250.00 or more will receive some FREE MONEY, as we give a 10% bonus! For example, if the initial deposit is $250.00 we put $25.00 additional into the account. If it is $450.00 we put $45.00 more.
    2. Keep lost and stolen money to a minimum, as once deposited, it is in a food account for safekeeping.
    3. It supports continued management of dietary restrictions for individuals who would like this.
    4. Please note. You can still be part of the Cafeteria Debit Program if the initial deposit is below $250.00. Unfortunately, the 10% bonus is not available for any deposits below this. The only exception to this rule is if a family has more than one student at this high school. In this case, after you make one initial deposit of $250.00, you still get the 10% bonus. We then divide the deposit and bonus among the family’s students.
  2. Cafeteria Debit Account and Deposits.
    1. The school provides each pupil with a Student Identification Card (ID). We use the ID Card to set up the account, for deposits made, and for any purchases. This helps eliminate the worry of money becoming lost or stolen.
    2. Deposits can be made weekly or monthly. We also accept yearly deposits, as some families prefer this option.
    3. You may make deposits for any amount by cash, with a money order, or with a check. If you are making out a check, it needs to be written out to Ridgewood High School. You may make an initial deposit with your child’s school registration fees.
  3. Cafeteria Debit Program Purchases:
    1. Whenever a student wants to make a purchase, they select whatever foods they want from the menu for that day. Once they present their ID for payment, we are able to immediately verify their identity by having the same picture in the computer and their remaining balance.
    2. Provided adequate funds are available in the account, the amount purchased during any given day may vary. For example, purchases may be used for breakfast, lunch, milk or ala carte items.
The computerized system maintains a record of how your student is spending their deposited funds. A parent can request an account history from our office, and the remaining balance is available to the student after each purchase. A low balance statement will be sent home when a student needs to have another deposit added to their account.
    3. Please note. It is important to understand that the Quest Debit Program does not allow the withdrawal of funds for cash. It does not allow the option of charging food like a credit card either. The only withdrawal from this account is for food purchases.
  4. Enrolling in the Mealtime Program:
    1. You may include payment for your initial deposit with your child’s registration fee.
Please return this completed application as well.
    2. Put a completed application, along with your deposit, in a regular envelope so you can have your student drop it off in the cafeteria during the school year.
    3. If you would rather mail the application and deposit you may do so.
      1. Address it to the school, 7500 West Montrose Avenue, Norridge, IL 60706-1196.
      2. Then add the words, ATTENTION: Quest Ridgewood High School
  5. Unused Funds
    1. When a student graduates or leaves Ridgewood, the parent may request in writing that the account balance be transferred to a sibling or refunded. Unclaimed balances less han $10 will revert to the school.

We know you will find our Mealtime Program beneficial and look forward to serving breakfast and lunch to you daily. If you have any question/concerns, please feel free to call us at (708) 697-5564. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Cafeteria Staff

Ridgewood Expands Cafeteria
Students eating lunch at Ridgewood High School in Norridge will be dining in a recently renovated cafeteria.

The $1.4-million project was designed by Donald R. Nicholson Associates, of Oak Park. Construction is being overseen by general contractors from Bergen Construction, of Palatine. Furnishings will cost an additional $325,000. Bonds and some savings will pay for the new cafeteria, said Ridgewood's business manager Cheryl Flinn.

The cafeteria will began being used on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 - one week late - to accommodate the construction process and allow time to train Quest Food Service Management personnel on the facility's new kitchen equipment. They're used to working with the previous cafeteria's 40-year-old appliances, said Ridgewood District 234 Superintendent Doctor Robert Lupo.

The new cafeteria is larger and lighter than its predecessor. The east wall in the building's old cafeteria area has been bumped out 18 feet to create a glass-walled atrium for more seating space in the cafeteria and to allow for a brick structure to house mechanicals for the kitchen.

"We'll lose five standard parking spaces," Lupo admitted. "We're moving our handicapped parking spaces south of the cafeteria. That way, handicapped drivers or passengers won't have to cross traffic lanes to get in and out of the building."

The new cafeteria has lots of natural light and more fluorescent fixtures than the old. More light will filter through to halls west of the facility, thanks to new glass panels in shared walls.

Students used to spend much of their 30-minute lunch periods waiting in two lines. In the new cafeteria, they'll visit stations - a hamburger station, a pizza station, a salad station, and so on.

"The system is called a 'scatter plan,'" Lupo explained. "It's the same method used in museums - the Chicago Art Institute, for example."

The new cafeteria will seat 300. At its south end, a former classroom has been converted into a faculty dining room, accommodating 40 persons.

Booths will line the north and south ends of the student area. Round tables will cluster in the center. Space has been set aside for vending machines and storage areas have been increased.

New gray furniture has been ordered for the student area. Floors will be gray with Ridgewood green accents. Faculty members will use their old furniture.

"It still looks great," Lupo said. "It's only two or three years old."

Ridgewood also got a new, larger transformer that summer. It will be capable of handling 4,000 amps; the old one, just 1,600.

Portions of this story are from an article written by Wynn Koebel Foster, and printed in the July 15, 2004 issue of the Pioneer Press Norridge and Harwood Heights News.

Ridgewood HS rehabs cafeteria
The 40-year-old cafeteria at Ridgewood High School, in Norridge, got a major overhaul in summer 2004. The $1.4-million project and furniture costing an additional $325,000 will be paid for with bonds and savings, said Cheryl Flinn, Ridgewood's business manager.

The proect was designed by Donald R. Nicholson Associates, of Oak Park. Bergen Construction, of Palatine, provided general contracting services.

The opening day of school was delayed one week to accommodate construction and to allow food-service workers from Quest Food Service Management to train with the new kitchen equipment.

"They're used to working with our old cafeteria's 40-year-old appliances," said Ridgewood District 234 Superintendent Robert Lupo.

The new cafeteria features a glass-walled atrium, created by bumping the old cafeteria's east wall and expanding the room by 18 feet. The expansion allowed for more seating space and for room for a brick structure to house the kitchen's mechanicals.

"We lost five standard parking spaces," Lupo explained, "and we moved our handicapped parked spaces south of the cafeteria."

Instead of standing in two lines waiting for food, students visit stations in the new cafeteria - a hamburger station, a pizza station, a salad station and so on.

"The system is called a 'scatter plan,'" Lupo explained. "It's the same method used by museums like the Chicago Art Institute."

The new cafeteria seats 300. Faculty members eat in a new, 40-seat faculty dining room at the south end of the cafeteria area.

Last summer, Ridgewood also acquired a new, larger transformer, capable of handling 4,000 amps. The transformer it replaced handled only 1,600.
