Board of Education Meetings
The District 234 Board of Education welcomes attendance by members of the public and the school staff at its meetings. A school board meeting serves several purposes: 1) An official meeting is the only means by which a board can carry out its legal duties or exercise its legal powers. Therefore, the primary purpose of a school board meeting is to transact business; 2) Board meetings also provide opportunities for creative and constructive decision-making by members of a board while attempting to reach consensus on selected topics; and 3) Board meetings offer an opportunity for the public and school staff to establish a formal dialogue with the Board of Education as board members conduct their agenda of school related topics. Successful meetings enable members of the Community High School District 234 Board of Education to conduct their business efficiently and to provide the decisive leadership required in developing educational programs for the students of School District 234.

The Illinois Constitution requires the Legislature to provide for the maintenance and support of a thorough and efficient system of free public schools. In response to this constitutional mandate, local school districts governed by Boards of Education have been established. As a result of this, your local Board of Education possesses the delicate responsibility of being accountable to both the State of Illinois and the community it serves.

The meetings of the Board of Education are normally held in the Community Room (Rooms 143 and 145) of Ridgewood High School, 7500 West Montrose Avenue, Norridge, IL, 60706-1196, on the third Monday of each month. Holiday or other schedule conflicts may cause variations and alterations of this schedule. Information regarding regular and special meetings of the Board of Education is available from the Superintendent's Office (708) 697-5531, or at the district website www.ridgenet.org.

Board Meeting Participation

Staff members and citizens of the community who wish to be placed on the agenda to present a recommendation, request, or to present information must submit a request in writing to Dr. Robert J. Lupo, Superintendent, 7500 West Montrose Avenue, Norridge, Illinois 60706-1196.

Requests should include name, address, telephone number, organization represented, purpose of the presentation, and any pertinent background information.

To be included on a regular meeting agenda, requests must reach the office of the Superintendent by 1:00 PM on the Monday of the week preceding the board meeting.

The Prepared Agenda

The prepared agenda generally proceeds as follows:
  1. Call to Order
  2. Pledge of Allegiance
  3. Declaration of Quorum
  4. Consent Agenda Requests
  5. Approve Agenda
  6. Take Action on Agenda Items
  7. Recognize Visitors and Invite Comments from the Public
  8. Board Forum
  9. Executive (Closed) Session (When necessary)
  10. Reconvene
  11. Adjourn

Minutes of Board Meetings are recorded by the Recording Secretary. Formal action on all items under consideration by the Board of Education must be approved during Open Session. Formal action on agenda items demands that a quorum (at least four members) be present. The President of the Board of Education is entitled to propose a motion and to vote on all issues.

All regular and special meetings are open to the public. Prior to each meeting, a board agenda is delivered to each board member, administrator, and members of the press. With appropriate notice and reason, a Closed Session may be called to allow the Board of Education to consider matters enumerated by the Illinois Open Meetings Act.
