Someone You Should Know: Sculptor Richard Hunt

Lifelong Chicagoan Reportedly Has More Pieces In Public Places Than Any Other Statue-Maker

When a teacher at Englewood High School encouraged a student named Richard Hunt to pursue his love of sculpture neither one could have guessed what lie ahead.

More than 50 years later, Hunt is one of the world's most famous and prolific artists.

CBS 2's Harry Porterfield says he's someone you should know.

At Midway Airport, those who fly and others passing by can't help but notice the gleaming metal figure. It's a stainless-steel sculpture entitled "Flight Forms," and it's the work of Hunt, a lifelong Chicagoan.

"From the time I was a kid, I liked to draw," he said.

"One teacher suggested I try sculpture," Hunt added. "Once I did that, working three-dimensionally was just more exciting than two-dimensionally."

Among Hunt's other Chicago sculptures is a bronze work of art that towers above Jonquil Park. And one of Hunt's favorites is "Jacobs Ladder" in the Woodson Library.

"It brings together the art, the architecture and the environment," he said.

Hunt's sculptures are admired all over the United States and throughout the world.

He works in a cavernous North Side studio that was once a CTA substation. It has a crane for lifting and high ceilings.

His studio looks like a junk yard, but from it some of the world's most treasured art objects emerge.

Some of Hunt's smaller pieces are in the lobby of one of the world's biggest buildings, the Willis Tower. But he takes his accomplishments with modesty. He reportedly has more pieces in public places in the United States than any other sculptor.

"I've got over 100 pieces in public places," Hunt said. "Maybe somebody will call the station tomorrow who has 125. But from the late '60s to 2010, there's been a lot of years to make sculptures and place them around."

Hunt was the youngest sculptor to exhibit at the Seattle World's Fair back in 1962. And as far as all the clutter in his studio, Hunt says one man's junk is another man's treasure.

Art students learn special techniques at area workshop
A select number of art students at Ridgewood High School, in Norridge, tried their skill at painting on fabric and making jewelry by fusing pieces of colored glass together on April 3 as the school's Art Department hosted the Metro Suburban Conference Art Show and Workshops.

"This was the second year for the Metro Suburban Conference," said art teacher Ben Shulman, of Ridgewood. "Ridgewood hosted this year's show and workshops and provided funding for the day."

Visiting artists Barb Ottolino and Bob Fritz were the show, teaching the students how to paint on silk and fuse glass. Then, they stepped back while the students practiced what they'd learned.

There were handouts. Fritz, of Lombard, who has worked with glass for more than 25 years supplied "Heat and Glass: Understanding the Effects of Temperature on Bullseye Glass" and "10 Ways to Improve Your Cutting." His work has been exhibited internationally. United States senators Ted Kennedy, Tom Harkin and Ron Wyden also own his freeblown glass creations.

Eight students from Ridgewood participated, including Angelica Bragiel, Malwina Charko, Magda Glinka, Allen Klewin, Kasia Lulek, Mike Lechowicz, Agnes Pogorecka and Kathleen Weiss. Three other high schools in the Metro Suburban Conference -- Riverside Brookfield, Fenton and Elmwood Park -- were also invited to bring eight students each.

The students were also invited to submit two-dimensional and three-dimensional works for a juried show.

"Their pieces were judged on artistic merit," said Shulman.

Categories for the show included drawing, painting, mixed media, jewelry and ceramics in styles such as modern, post modern, realism and functional. Prizes for the best pieces were gift certificates for Dick Blick's Art Materials.

Lulek won first place in functional art, and Weiss won first place in postmodern art. Each received a $75 gift certificate. Lechowicz won a $25 gift certificate for third place in functional art.

"I was impressed by the high quality of the art in the show," Shulman said, adding, "The detail and the effort the students put into their work was exceptional."

Ridgewood High School Art Club Students Place in State Competition

Members of the Ridgewood High School Art Club chapter of the Rembrandt Society, along with their sponsor, Mrs. Sarah Machaj, joined other Illinois art clubs at the Rend Lake Resort and Conference Center in Whittington, Illinois for the 28th Annual Rembrandt Society Art Convention on March 6, 2009 and 7, 2009. The theme for the convention, “Under the Big Top”, was followed in the art and activities. A special project for the art competition emphasized the circus theme.

The convention began with introductory mixer games, club photos, a warm welcome from Julia Crowe, director of the Rembrandt Society. The morning and afternoon sessions included the introduction of chapters, a guest speaker, two hands-on workshops and a viewing of the student art competition exhibit.

Bob Huber, Director of the Fine Arts Department at Blackburn College, was the guest speaker who demonstrated his skills at throwing on the potter’s wheel along with a workshop in clay. Anthony Evetts, art teacher at Sesser-Valier High School, taught a workshop on collage. Later, Ridgewood High School art teacher Sarah Machaj taught the students how to make balloon animals.

During the convention, students entered artwork for Regional judging in the Rembrandt Art Competition. The following students placed in Regional competition:
Noor Akhras - 1st place in sculpture
1st place in painting
2nd place in painting
Susan Hogan - 2nd place in color drawing
Marta Kozlowska - 3rd place in color drawing
Damian Marzec - 2nd place in sculpture
Veselka Ivanovic - 1st place in colored drawing
- 3rd place in colored drawing
Peter Golebiowski - 1st place in painting
- 3rd place in painting
Kelly Krajecki - 3rd place in colored drawing
Rene Franklin - Outstanding Achievement Award in the special project “Circus” theme category
Alussa Kahle - Outstanding Achievement Award in the special project “Circus” theme category
Artwork that earned first place in Regional went on to be judged at the State level. The Ridgewood Art Club had four artworks go on to State judging. The artworks were created by Peter Golebiowski, Veselka Ivanovic and Noor Akhras. Two students placed in the State competition. Veselka Ivanovic earned a 3rd place in state in the color drawing category. Noor Akhras earned an Outstanding Artist award in state in the sculpture category.

At dinner, students participated in a costume contest based on the “Under the Big Top” theme. After dinner, a new officer induction ceremony was held. The rest of the evening was devoted to games and socializing, making new acquaintances and dancing the night away with a DJ.

The whole day was a wonderful opportunity for Ridgewood art students to interact with art students from all over Illinois, have their artwork critiqued and to learn new art techniques. Ridgewood’s Art Club students are already looking forward to next year’s convention! For more information about the Rembrandt Society, log on to www.montgomery.k.12.il.us/Rembrandt/index.html .

Mural Tiles
Participate in a ceramic mural "Unity Mosaic" installed on the entry wall of the Frances Bernero Auditorium.

Moasic Moasic

The center of the mural contains a disk with the DaVinci man inside. The tiles of the radiating border around the DaVinci Man represent the value of the individual in the community. The students, faculty, administration, staff, Board of Education and 50th Anniversary Committee created these tiles. These tiles contain images, impressions, symbols, reliefs, textures, etc. that represent the individual creating the tile.

If you would like to be involved and create a tile for the mural, you can do any of the following…

  • e-mail me at smachaj at ridgenet dot org and ask to take a tile home to work on – I will place a tile, a couple tools, extra clay and directions in your mailbox to take home,
  • make your tile during the same time you bring your study hall class to the art room (Room 118),
  • come to the art room (Room 118) during your prep period to work on it (except for 8th period because I’m in the Mac Lab),
  • come after school on Thursdays to work on it (I have Art Club until 5:00 PM on Thursdays),
  • or contact me if you have an alternative idea.
