DECA is an association of Marketing students. Membership is open to all students
who have had at least one business course.
The purposes of DECA are as follows:
- To develop a respect for education in marketing and management as a vocation.
- To promote the growth and development of DECA.
- To engender respect for vocational education and desire for vocational growth
during school and adult life.
- To develop progressive, competent, self-reliant, aggressive, and cooperative
leadership skills in areas of business.
- To encourage high ethical standards in personal, academic, and career areas
through an appreciation of the opportunities it affords.
- To provide for mental and physical health through satisfactory social and
recreational activities.
- To foster a sense of responsibility for the civic, social, and moral welfare
of society.
- To nurture appreciation for the contributions of the arts and sciences to
business.
This is the Ridgewood Chapter of DECA. It is part of Illinois and National
DECA. Deca is a youth organization composed of voluntary members whose program
of leadership and development is designed specifically for students interested
in learning more about business skills or pursuing a career in business and
marketing.
Club Responsibilities:
- No set requirement for the number of meetings a member must attend will
be set. But students who do not attend a meeting miss the help the Advisors
give the students, especially when preparing for competition.
- Members are expected to volunteer for the various community service projects
in which DECA is involved. Some of the activities include, but are not limited
to, Safety Town, Adopt-A-Grandparent at the local nursing home, planned activities
at the local nursing home, food drives, and fund-raising activities.
- All members are expected to participate in the Area 14/15 Competition held
usually in February to prepare for State competition. All eligible students
are expected to compete in an individual competitive event at the State Career
Development Conference every year in Springfield during the month of March.
Students who wish to become more involved may participate in the written manual
competition at the same time.
Club Meetings
- DECA meets at least once each week throughout the entire school year. At
the present time DECA meets every Wednesday after school. Other meetings are
set as needed as the time draws nearer to competition. These meetings are
open to anyone in the membership wishing additional help. The day and time
for these meetings is determined by the Advisor and the students involved.
- All Ridgewood members must pay dues to the National, State, and Ridgewood
chapters. The National and State dues are $6.00 each. Ridgewood Chapter dues
are $8.00. The membership year is from September 1 to August 31 inclusive.
- Visitors are welcome at the weekly meetings to allow them to determine if
DECA is something they wish to join and be an active participant. Each year
at the beginning of the school year members are encouraged to bring a visitor
(potential member) to a welcome party hosted by the club. Visitors are not
allowed to participate in competition.
