The Story

Aladdin McFaddin is a dreamer. He spends his time laying about on rocks thinking slowly and carefully and things. The things that boys think about. this aggravates his girlfriend Bessie Mae Moocho, because she knows her father, the Sultan, will not let her marry a poor dreamer like Aladdin. Although Aladdin loves Bessie very much, he can't seem to learn enough to impress the Sultan.

One day, while Aladdin is lying in the sun thinking, an evil oil-baron named El Slippo Magish appears on the scene. He is in search of the treasures that lie in the cave under the rock upon which Aladdin is sleeping. Magish tries to move the rock but to no avail. Then he tries to enlist the powers of The Slaves of the Ring to help him move the rock, but the slaves say they cannot help him because he does not truly believe in the powers of magic. This leaves Magish on a search to find a genuine 'believer'.

Magish sees Aladdin lying on the rock, finds out that he is gullible, and convinces Aladdin to go down into the cave to get the treasures. In the cave, Aladdin meets strange, dancing Stalagmites and finds many beautiful treasures including, you guessed it, a genie's lamp. On the way out of the cave however, Aladdin gets stuck. A perilous predicament for such a young boy. will Aladdin discover the power of the ring and the lamp and be able to get out of the cave? Will he finally be able to think clearly and stop dreaming? Will the evil El Slippo Magish try to marry beautiful Bessie Mae while Aladdin is stuck in the cave? There is only one way to find out. Come see the Ridgewood High School Drama Club's production of Aladdin McFaddin.

About The Play

Did you know Aladdin's last name was Mc Faddin? Well, no one else did either until this happy, enchanting play bounce into existence - but the idea fits perfectly, for this version of the Arabian Nights tale stars an oily villain from Oklahoma, an Irish-Italian mother from Persia, a father with a German-Arabian name and a Senator Claghorn personality, and a heroine name Bessie Mae Moocho. You can't get much more comopolitan than that.

Not since Scheherazade kept Bluebeard entertained for a thousand and one nighsts so she could live a thousand and one days has the wold seen suh a lively re-telling of the story of the Aladdin and his wonderful lamp. "This production takes the from of a musical and features sprightly tunes," said a Denver Poast critic.

The sprightly, singable songs combined with serb characterizations and a fast-paced plot to from a funny, lovable play wich will fascinate childern of all ages. Not only is the genie of the lamp there to work magic for them, but three slaves of the ring also appear - female genies names Debra, Barbra and Sandra Kadabra. You guessed it; their father was Abra Kadabra.

Aladdin McFaddin was first presented at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, followed by a critically acclaimed staging at the Bonfils Theather for Children in Denver.

Director's Notes About the Play

The Ridgewood High School Drama Club began producing plays in the fall of 1992. In that time it has produced three plays:
Dracula, Ridgewood 60634, and Our Town and has begun a program to learn improvisation comedy. the group is made up of interested high school students who act for community audiences, and become involved in all aspects of play production.

The group is directed by Kristin Lohrentz, an English teacher at Ridgewood High School, and business management is done by Karin Spiess, an ESL teacher at Ridgewood. In addition the scenic design and technical direction is done by David Krugh, a resident scenic artist and designer at Candlelight dinner Playhouse and who design sets at other teachers throughout the Chicago area.

The mission of the Ridgewood High School Drama Club is to give High School students the opportunity to experience the art of teacher through many different types of live performances on the stage. Many students at Ridgewood have expressed interest in performing for a younger audience in a children's play. They chose to do Aladdin McFaddin because of the popularity of the Disney movie "Aladdin."

During the production of this play, Ridgewood students will audition for parts, learn music, choreography, acting skills for children's theatre, characterization and rehearsal procedures, and finally perform the play in front of an audience.

The Ridgewood High School Drama Club hopes that you can become part of this exciting production.
